This English-born American actress for whom George Bernard Shaw penned "Major Barbara" in 1907 (but which she never performed) debuted in New York in 1900 and was the toast of Broadway for a decade; she was the first woman to serve on the board of directors of the Metropolitan Opera Association and founded the Metropolitan Opera Guild. IPS, 6¼" X 8½", n.p., 1901. Near fine. Full-length sepia-tone portrait of a young Robson sitting sidesaddle on a chair, the chair's back facing the viewer, with her hands atop the backrest and her head resting thereon, casting a come-hither look. In a light area just below this striking image she signs and inscribes boldly in black ink: "To dear Miss Fred -- / with [ ? ] love, / Eleanor Robson / 1901." An exceptionally early piece.
