Indian Village Site and Cemetery Near Madisonville, Ohio(Papers of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University, Vol. VIII, No. 1) by Earnest A. Hooton, With Notes on the Artifacts by Charles C. Willoughby, was published by the Peabody Museum, Cambridge, Mass., in 1920. This 137-page, 92-year-old, 6" X 9 1/4", thought-to-be First Edition(for what it's worth!) offering is a rebound ex-library copy in G- condition. Let's be clear--physically, overall, this offering is still in rather firm/sound shape. There are just so many little flaws present that I cannot rate it any higher. Foremost among them are the fairly frequent(15-20, roughly) small to medium-sized tears of various pages of text, all of which I felt compelled to clear tape/secure(this offering was printed on a very thin stock paper to begin with, and age has made said pages pretty brittle). Handler/Peruser, beware, as you work with this learned, excruciatingly detailed study. Modest yellowing is observed of endpapers front and back as well as text's pages. There are several of the standard library markings seen, including some mild stickiness toward the bottoms of both cover boards resulting from a previous person's removal of what was no doubt a Dewey decimal label. There is an 1 1/2"-wide X 1 3/4"-high piece of the bottom-right corner of page 3/4 missing/gone, and pages 93-112 had their top-outer corners bent in/creased(they are now bent back in place, and thus now mildly creased). The second blank page in from back loose end page has been removed/is missing, for some mysterious reason! From Note, "The explorations which form the basis of the following paper were carried on intermittently under the auspices of the Peabody Museum from 1882 to 1911. During this period, Dr. Charles L. Metz of Madisonville, the discoverer of the site, had general supervision of the work. .It is hoped that the study of these remains as set forth in the following pages will prove of special value to students of the archaeology of the Ohio region, as it connects the culture of the occupants of this site definitely with the protohistoric and late prehistoric period of the [Little Miami] Valley." This ambitious history/implications of what all was unearthed at the Madisonville dig site is presented in some seven(7) parts/sections: The Discovery of the Site and History of the Explorations; The Burials; The Cache-Pits; Hearths and Other Remains; Artifacts From the Site; The Skeletal Remains: and, lastly, Conclusion. Sprinkled throughout are several black and white Drawings and some 30 black and white photographs and/or nicely rendered line drawings, not to mention many, many charts and diagrams, all helpful in clarifying points brought out/explored in Mr. Hooton's text. Despite its flaws, this volume's contents, for one interested in the subject under consideration, outweigh the conditional annoyances, in my mind, Reader, with You being the final, appropriate arbiter. Thanks very much!!. N° de ref. del artículo 005903
