For extra pictures of the more valuable books, please press the 'Ask Bookseller A Question' button. Published around the time of the Great Exhibition. This magnificent 3-volume set is in contemporary three quarters leather. The books contain numerous fold out and other plates that appear to be complete. They include 'Edmondson's railway ticket counting machine', one beautiful plate with 42 pictures showing examples of mechanical movements and one with five drawings showing differential movements; train engine of the London and South Western Railway, a second table of 41 drawings of mechanical movements, the cotton plant the caloric engines, reciprocating and pendulous engines, direct action marine engines, portable non-condensing steam engine, a slotting machine for seven feet wheels, two beautiful plates showing the great hydraulic press employed in raising the Britannia tubular bridge (this received a prize medal at the Great Exhibition). There are also two lovely engravings in the text showing the casting of the cylinder and the boring of the cylinder. Also includes a dioptic revolving lighthouse light and engines of the West India mail packets and a high pressure blowing engine and many more besides. There is a very attractive frontispiece containing a picture of the Great Exhibition building, the tubular Britannia plates and nine vignettes in each volume. The three frontispieces are Findle's cave, the Conway Tubular Bridge and Megatherium series of bones all in excellent clean condition. Contents are in generally good clean condition. The various plates vary from very clean to foxed. Some of the larger ones have creases and the usual tear against the inner fold. As far as we can see all the plates are as called for but it is very hard to know for sure. We have not found any loss to any plates and those tears and creases that do exist can be readily repaired. The original three quarter leather boards with four raised bands, gold decorations, and title labels have been re-laid on new leather spines with lovely marbled outer boards. Original endpapers. As a result of the new binding, all the books are very tight and secure. They look very smart on the shelf. The photo is of the boards. Photos of some of the illustrations are available. Descripción de la librería: Our base is near Billingshurst, West Sussex UK. We have been book collecting for 30 years. Our books are stored at the appropriate steady temperature and humidity. We offer rare and out of print books primarily to collectors. We normally describe the condition of boards and spines separately and in addition to contents. For magazines and leaflets we use the book description box to describe the CONTENTS and the jacket box to describe the covers. To assist collectors we try and offer magazines individually (subject to a minimum order value of £10 + P&P). For a number of the more valuable books photographs are avaialable on our website. Some have multiple images and there are both small and large images available. Either click "ask bookseller a question" or e mail us direct to access the picture gallery. For queries made through our BiancoLibrary website we can provide images "scanned to e-mail" for books vlaued at over 20 pounds or so. Please bear in mind that these scans cover boards and plates etc but cannot always accommodate spines. In some cases we can also fax black and white copies. We ask customers not to abuse this service.
