Descripción:

Copperplate engraving, handcolored, plate mark 9 1/4 x 15 1/4 inches on sheet 9 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches. Adhesive residue on verso from previous matting (not affecting front), very good condition. Together with the companion print "1er. Vue des Boulvard (sic)" (our record number 44032), this is an example of a "vue d'optique" or perspective view, a popular print from the second half of the 18th century, designed to be projected with a viewing device (a zograscope or perspective glass) which enhanced the illusion of depth and perspective, providing something of a 3D effect. Unlike many prints of this type there is no title printed in mirror image at the top of the print, and the coloring is much finer than for many examples of the type. However, the text under the title alerts the public that the view is engraved to be viewed "dans l'optique." There is a most interesting and thorough article by C.J. Kaldenbach "Perspective Views" which was originally published in Print Quarterly (June 1985) and is now available for viewing on the web. A charming view on a tree-lined boulevard in Paris, close to the Porte St. Antoine near the Bastille. N° de ref. de la librería
