This is an exceedingly early copy, illustrated by the best Victorian illustrators. Very good condition for being over 150 years old. Hinges fully attached and sound. Some general rubbing. Armorial bookplate. Inscription on blank end-paper, dated 1933. A 'memorial to Ingoldsby' news clipping is affixed to front end-paper. Some foxing. Thumb prints on title page, signs of usage. Tightly bound. Printed on quality paper. Includes a frontis and copious illustrations by the three most famous illustrators of that period (These are the famous illustrators of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Charles Dickens' works, etc.). A collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry supposedly written by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pen-name of Richard Harris Barham. Although based on real legends and mythology, such as the hand of glory, they are usually deliberately humorous parodies or pastiches of medieval folklore and poetry. A gorgeous copy of this classic masterpiece, extensively illustrated by the best illustrators. This book would make a perfect gift or addition to any collection.
