Descripción:

First published in both orange wraps and orange cloth, the clothbound edition is far scarcer and came in two variants, with the title reading down the spine, or across as this copy. Cohen believes the across variety to be the first issue, and it seems the scarcer of the two. . 5 x 7.25 inches, 143 pages. Churchill was strongly opposed to Gandhi and Independence for India in the 1930?s. This book publishes 10 of his speeches on the subject. It is now a scarce title lacking from many collections. Book very crisp and unworn, strong orange colour on covers, dulled on spine, some faint white areas of condensation on covers. Page edges off white with faint spots, Foxing on first 3 and final leaves, otherwise clean contents. (ICS A38). N° de ref. de la librería

Descripción London, Thornton Butterworth, 1931 (1st.)., 1931. Paperback, Demy 8vo. (7.5 x 5 ins.) Orange soft paper covers, lettered in black. In very good condition. Spine faded else cover bright. Minor crease to top front corner with small mark below. Some minor rubbing to rear edges. A couple of spots to outer page edges. Else a very clean and tight copy. 141pp. Cat.3pp. "India" is, like many of Churchill's speeches a scarce item. It was simultaneously published in hard-back and in the limp cover edition (see above), both editions equally scarce. "The political significance of this little volume is that the subject matter and Churchill's own stance on the question of India largely contributed to his many years in the wilderness during the 1930's period of personal depression in his political fortunes, yet, curiously, a period of preparation, because by distancing himself from so many others, he then became acceptable to all as wartime Prime Minister" (BMC). Descripción London: Thornton Butterworth, Ltd, 1931, 1931. Octavo. Original orange wrappers, spine and covers printed in black. Housed in a red half morocco slipcase by Maltby's of Oxford. Tiny puncture to top left-hand side of front wrapper and first 5 leaves, slight spotting to edges of text block but overall a remarkably bright copy. Excellent. First edition, first impression, wrappered issue (the book was issued simultaneously in hardback). The 1930s are characterized as Churchill's wilderness years, with his unrelenting opposition to Hitler being seen as main cause for his ostracism. However "another, and earlier reason lay in his bitter opposition to Baldwin's India policy Churchill had always hit hard; not for him a round of gentlemanly sparring between friends. His fight to maintain full control of India employed not just the clenched fist but the bludgeon" (Woods, Artillery of Words). Cohen A92.1.c; Woods A38. Nº de ref. de la librería 111354
