Descripción:

25.5 x 27.5 cm, pp. 135. Signed and dated 1990 by Chatham on half title page, signed by Harrison, Waddington and Chatham on title page. Brown leather with gilt titling on upper board and spine, marbled endpapers. Includes two lithographs in front pocket: Winter I & II. Small (1/2 inch) scratch on upper board and slight corner wear is all that mars this otherwise fine copy. Publication coincided with Chatham's 30-year retrospective at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana. This is the least common of three known editions (of uncertain order): one paperback, one numbered in linen with slipcase, and this one in leather. Preface by the late novelist and poet Jim Harrison is the first published appearance of that essay (Torrey and Orr). Other essays include "Reclaiming the Land" by Waddington, an arts writer and former director of the Steensland Gallery at St. Olaf College in Minnesota; and "Family, Art and Friends" by Chatham. Paintings are divided into California and Montana sections. N° de ref. de la librería

Descripción Clark City Press, Livingston, Montana, 1990. Pictorial Softcover. Estado de conservación: Fine. First Printing. "But perhaps this is an ordinary mistake I am making as a failed painter and a mediocre major in art history. Painters paint. And leave us to create the gloss, write the commentary and addenda, establish schools and groups, thread our intelligences between the sense and the nonsense, all to pause a moment or two in virtual incomprehension before the painting itself which, by definition, does not use language or music when it speaks to us. No art form leaves uo quite so alone with ourselves, and in galleries and museums we put our hands behind our backs in a parody of submission to the work, perhaps glancing left or right for a friendly nod. In Chatham's best work the painting is so inconsolably austre and authoritative that we have a choice of turning away or temporarily losing our personalities, the latter which, I propose, is the main reason for enduring a work of art: to briefly abandon ourselves to another, perhaps higher reality; then return to ourselves, having added dimension to our consciousness of the nature of life." {Jim Harrison}. This book has 136 pages and is profusely illustrated. Overall, this is a FINE copy of this SCARCE title. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Nº de ref. de la librería 064704
