With this book prolific teller of Aussie tales, Ion Idriess, produced one of his most classic stories, moving from his usual accounts of explorations and events, peo-ple and places within Australia to tell the story of a small dog of undistinguished breeding which became the "mate" of the troops who adopted this Desert stray. The tale of Horrie is basedf on a diary kept by Private J B Moody, of the Machine Gun Battalion of the AIF and adapted by the author. It is the story of the attachment of a small dog to the rugged soldiers it accompanied through the WWII campaiging in Egypt, Greece, Crete and Palestine and of the strong bond established beween these tough fighting men and a little white dog. Horrie experienced all the dangers of war with his warrior minders--- through terror, lost mates, moments of hurmour and grief. When it was time for the troops to return home they conspired to ensure their little hero went too. That was the degree of their affection for Horrie. As one early reviewer put it the book is ".a fascinating story of a fine friendship between brave men and a brave little dog." That assessment rings as true today as it did when first published in 1945. First reprint from Angus and Robertson of 1948, 232 pages, b/w photo frontis and 16 other b/w photos. Light brown hard covers with black spine titles are VG+ with few small marks top corner front board, three small tape marks front pastedown where DJ previously secured, a date stamp 25 August 1948 top corner, unusually the FFEP carries a pasted advertisement for a Hillman Pullman Limousine (1948 model) which occupies almost all the page, no inscriptions and text block is excellent, two small tape marks on rear pastedown. The original art/photo DJ is unclipped, plastic protected with small section missing front top edge adjacent spine, few chips to top edge. Early editions of this iconic Idriess book with DJ are scarce. N° de ref. del artículo 005125
