1970 Hardcover book in original Dustjacket. Book is Near Fine, clean, bright, tight, appears unread. Jacket is VG+ , inside bottom corner clipped, light edgewear and scuffs to soft paper jacket. Great looking book; raspberry pink parfait colored textured cloth over boards, with Gold gilt title impressed on spine, in brightly colored jacket with painting design by Graphic Partners, and small Richard Asman matte B&W photograph of the author on inside back flap. . Book size is 5-3/4 x 8-3/4 x 3/4" thick; 174 pages, illustrated with 16 pages Glossy B&W photographs. Edward Thorpe of England was a painter and writer, and, like so many, fascinated by America, and by Hollywood in particular. This book is his attempt to capture the atmosphere of Hollywood as the 60s came toa close; the 'real' Hollywood, of the high-school kid and the housewife, the hustler and the hooker, and the intriguing actuality of the city of dreams. He went there not knowing what to expect, but wondering who really lives there and what they do with their lives. He had a love-hate relationship with the place he'd never been, as some do who come there from other countries, a gnawing jealousy of being an 'outsider' . but found the city more exciting and more exasperating, more likeable and more loathsome than he'd imagined. The seamy underside and the wonderful reality of Hollywood, in L.A. California , as told by an outsider who was delighted to discover it for the first time. The photographs are rather sweetly naive; especially considering what was going on all over the city in the late 60s, early 70s. He captions the photo of one building as 'a modern rotunda', evidently not realizing it is the famed Capitol Records building, built in the shape of a stack of records. He shows other buildings as being ' 1930s shopfronts' on Hollywood; they were to be found all over Los Angeles at that time. He shows 'street corner cowboys' from behind, just a couple of ordinary guys in blue jeans, and a 'drag queen and friends', similarly from behind, so we'll have to take his word for it. A photograph captioned 'motorcycle insignia' is a guy on the Boulevard wearing colors of the Choppers on the back of his jacket; we can see his face in 3/4 profile. There is one chapter on Hippy Hollywood , one on Homosexual Hollywood , one on Hustler Hollywood, and several on ordinary people, inside Hollywood , but outside the city of dreams. Fun look back at a time that was, for those who remember what it was like to live in L.A. at the end of the 60s, and those who only wish they did.
