Some of the leather is rubbed/scraped to the edges in places and a small triangle of leather (approx 1cm x 1cm) is missing from the top front of the spine, together with a 4cm sliver of leather from the top edge of the spine. Considering the size of the book All Hinges are Tight and Sound, although the front inner paper hinge is splitting. ALL edges bright GILT. A Handsome volume. Internally each volume is separately titled, paginated and indexed. Marbled endpapers. Some light foxing to the prelims, o/w Very Clean Bright and Tight. Volume One = (10) + 770 pp. Volume 2 = 238 pp. The 8 maps/plans, and the Pedigree of the Chichester Family are all large folded 'fold-outs' and bound at the end of the book - lightly browned and 'curled' on the edges of the paper as they stick out of the volume. A few maps/plans have varying sized (now closed) tears to crease lines and/or a blank section. The genealogy of the O'Neills, and the two, tinted, portraits of Arthur Chichester are present in the book as called for. This book is the indispensable foundation for all studies of Belfast's history. There is a gift note dated 1918 on the second free blank endpaper "From J. F. W. Hodges, the nephew of the Author, to his daughter Harriet Benn Williams." also enclosed is a letter (a single sheet folded in 2 written on 4 sides) dated 24th March 1877 starting "My dear Uncle, I have been lately collecting as much information as I can about our family. Signed "Your aff Nephew Edward Benn" - So I assume ? Writing to the author? . There are also 2 later (browned/torn) newspaper sheets/cuttings = 1.
