This book comes with the original compliments card of the 1924 President of Studebaker laid in, along with a newspaper clipping with an Associated Press short story in 1977, announcing the final demise of the Studebaker manufacturing name; this clipping from the Vancouver Sun. Book is approximately 6-1/2 x 9-1/2 in size; just over 1/2" thick; 229 pages of information , illustrated with many photographs and illustrations of the principals of the company, and of the automobiles and carriages they had built to 1924 , as well as charts and balance sheets and financial information and production information about the company to that date. In 1918 , Albert Erskine of the Studebaker Corporation wrote a biography and history of the company. That book was about the Studebecker family, who changed their name to Studebaker, not long after coming to America in the early 1700s. That book was dedicated to his friend John Mohler Studebaker and had John's portrait on the front cover. Five years later, in 1924, this book was put out by Erskine with updated information about the company; Erskine had his own picture put at the beginning of this book, enclosed his own compliments card , and had an introduction written by Charles A. Lippincott to include info about Erskine and his philanthropy. (Erskine was great grandson to Albert Russel, a Colonel in the Revolutionary Army , whose family were among the early settlers of Huntsville , Alabama.) Erskine was justly proud of his financial record at that time, guiding the company; in 1921, for instance, while the automotive industry as a whole went down some 45 percent, Studebaker , by contrast , showed gains of nearly 20 percent; although that all came to a sad end not too many years later. In 1924 , this book, an expanded edition , again about the Studebaker family, but with the up to date information on the company, was published by Erskine for the car's dealers and stock-holders and friends of the coporation & sales people and their best clients. Studebaker had a long varied history, from wagon making in the late 1700s , up to the Oregon Trail , and California Gold Rush. Presidents had their inaugural carriages made by Studebaker; they made wagons and ambulances for the Union Army in the Civil War; then car production quite early on, and made both wagons and automobiles, equipment & vehicles during WWI and WWII for the U.S. , Britain and France. Unfortunately, Studebaker didn't last, but in its heyday it turned out some groundbreaking , and some gorgeous , cars, trucks, and buses. There are illustrations of Carriages, buggies, and cars and trucks throughout this book, including the Big-Six and Special-Six coupe and sedan ; some Presidential carriages ; the different Studebaker plants ; and principals of the company ; including some of the Lehman Brothers who were instrumental in securing financing for the corporation at one point in their history; Plant No. 2 , showing the assembly line ; views of the premises of various dealers of Studebaker cars, around the world, including in Quebec and overseas , India , Shanghai , Sweden , New Zealand , and more ; photos of huge dealer's banquets held at the 1924 Chicago & New York Automobile Show, much more. Please note, if you are looking for relatives or ancesters, there are not identifiable people visible in the assembly line photographs, nor the various plants, or dealerships; however there are a great number of identifiable dealers visible in the 2 full-page banquet photos.
