Descripción

Nine Books; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 1990 pages; [No date given] Circa 1855. London Printing & Publishing Co. & John Tallis & Co. 3 volumes in 6 (divisions) books, complete. Uniformly bound 4to volumes in original publisher's trade red cloth with decorative and ornate pictorial designs brightly in gilt to spines, and decorative borders and rules to boards in blind. Illustrated with a single fold two page hand colored map and tissue guarded steel plate engravings of notable Scottish figures. Usually 6-8 engravings per book or 12 to 14 per "volume". Extra engraved illustrated title page with Tallis imprint; plates in the first 3 of the 6 books have the Tallis masthead while the latter three books contain engravings with the London Printing & Publishing imprint. Publisher name to cloth at spine is Tallis. Front matter for each volume is bound in at the rear of the final book, including separate title pages, contents pages, plate lists and general preface to the work. Tissue gaurded engraved plates are bound in at the front of each book rather than being placed according to the indicated page number in the lists of plates. Bindings snug and contents bright and clean. Some pages unopened. Frontmost 3 inches of the cover board of the first two books are scraped with abrasion to the cloth, presumably from a too short shelf. Just mild shelf bump to corners, mild pulling and superficial fray to cloth at spine ends. Steel plate of William Maitland is starting and a little furred along the front edge of the page where it has protruded. A few short scrape rubs to the front edges of a couple of the boards. Overall a handsome and well preserved set; contents lovely. VG+ . Oversize book may require additional charges for expedited or international shipping. N° de ref. de la librería 28586
