Original black patterned cloth with new cloth spine. 8vo. 359pp. Illustrated. First edition. A history of this city in New London county which became an important commercial, transportation and manufacturing hub in the 18th century. There are sections on its purchase from the Indians, early settlement, land grants, Major Fitch and other important settlers, Chelsea Landing, roads and boundaries, Revolutionary War period, churches, education, commerce, shipping, fires, local industries, railroads, manufactures, and much more. The work is illustrated with 6 handsome engravings showing views of the city, its harbor, Greenville, Norwich Falls and more. The author, Frances Manwaring Caulkins, was an important figure of the period. An educator who studied under Lydia Sigourney, she ran a girls school in the city and wrote numerous instructional works for young women as well as many works of local Connecticut history. A good copy with some chipping to the cover edges. The text has some heavy foxing and spotting but is in otherwise good condition.
