Complete in three volumes. Volume I is dated 1817 to the title page; Volume II 1815 to the title page; Volume III 1815 to the title page - however Volume III is dated 1822 to the engraved title page, and includes a final chapter on the death and funeral (in St. Helena) of Bonaparte in 1821. The Advertisement in Volume I states: 'As is regards the present publication, two of the Volumes were published at a rather early period of the late War - the third was added some time afterwards - and it always formed a part of the plan of the Author, to continue it, when either a renewal of hostilities, or the death of the principal actor, should enable him to give a fair and honorable conclusion to the work.' '.the death of Bonaparte has determined the Author, in connexion with the Publisher, to enrich the work with several new and splendid Embellishments; and to continue it from the period of his departure from the isle of Elba to that of his death at St. Helena'. This is an ex library set bound in quarter leather with brown buckram boards. Gilt lettering and call numbers to spines, front endpapers have a barcode, stamps and slight damage where pockets have been removed, stamps and numbers to the verso of the title pages, some plates have a stamp to the reverse, there are also some occasional stamps to the margins within the text. Excellent solid bindings, some scattered light foxing and a few occasional marks and stains to text but generally clean throughout. Volume III includes a 'Directions to the Binder' sheet, however this does not correspond to the plates in this set - some plates are missing, others are present that are not mentioned in the directions. Volume I has 6 plates (no frontis or engraved title); Volume II has a frontis and 6 further plates (no engraved title); Volume III has a frontis, engraved title and 7 further plates (the frontis and 2 others are hand coloured, one of the uncoloured plates is torn across with an old repair). A scarce and sought after early history of Napoleon, the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, this being the first revised and expanded edition, issued after Napoleon's death. An ex library set but still a nice solid example with some attractive plates. Overall condition is Very Good. Please Note: This is a heavy item and international postage will be more than the standard rate. Actual Royal Mail postage costs are: Europe £19.00; Oceania £27.95; Rest of World £25.65.
