Small 8vo. Brown cloth with gilt lettering. xiv, (132pp), (1p ad), (12pp lined). Illustrations, map, decorative endpapers. Very good. Mild edgewear. Tight and nice salesman's dummy of this standard account of the May 31, 1889 catastrophe near central Pennsylvania, featuring selections from a various chapters of this history. The dozen lined subscriber pages at the rear are unused, although two following lined pages appear to have been removed. The subtitle elaborates: "All the Fearful Record; the Breaking of the South Fork Dam; the Sweeping Out of Connemaugh Valley; the Overthrow of Johnstown; the Massing of the Wreck at the Railroad Bridge; Escapes, Rescues, Searches for Survivors and the Dead; Relief Organizations, Stupendous Charities, Etc., Etc. with Full Accounts of the Destruction on the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers, and the Bald Eagle Creek." Bears a choice autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a pictorial 3" X 4" "From the Library of" bookplate signed in black ballpoint by FRANK SHOMO (1889-1997), who adds below his signature his birth date of "2-20-1889." Shomo was the last known survivor of the flood at the time of his death, living to the ripe old age of 108. Signed in the 1990s but still with a firm hand. A choice copy.
