Two volumes bound in one, paginated consecutively. Thick royal quarto 35x24 cm. Pp. (x), lii, 392, (3); (ii), 393-612, 11. Plus numerous folding engraved plates to each volume. Two title-pages printed in red and black, the first is preceded by a preliminary illustrated title-page incorporating woodcut and letterpress. Imprimatur, dedication to the King. Hardcover, recently bound in pristine full calf antique style, spine with large raised bands between compartments, crimson morocco lettering-piece in gilt in second compartment, blind decoration to each of the remainders, sides ruled in blind; small hole at inner blank margin of title-page neatly repaired. In fine condition. Imposing, most attractive tome. ~ Photomechanical reproduction of the 1727 edition. Printed in a limited edition of 150 copies, this is copy no. 26. Kaempfer (1651-1716), a surgeon with the Dutch East India Company, arrived in Japan in 1690 at Nagasaki and stayed there for almost 4 years. His account of that stay, first published in Britain in 1727, has long been recognized as the most authoritative guide to virtually all aspects of Japan and the Japanese at that time.
