914 pages; Two volumes in original maroon leatherette bindings with gilt lettering at spine and gilt emblem on front covers, top edges gilt; pages clean and unmarked, but outer page edges show light scattered foxxing when book is closed. Former owner's name on front paste-down endpaper of Volume 1. OCLC: 2408125 At the rear of Volume 1 a printed note is tipped-in stating: "Special attention is called to the Author's seal in Japanese characters, made of green agate produced in Idzumo Province. Among so many others, Hearn liked this one best, being a present from Mr. Sentaro Nishida who was an intimate friend of his, at Matsue." Also at rear of each volume is another tipped-in sheet with the Author's Seal. Lectures taken down by Hearn's students at the time of their delivery (September 1900-March 1903) and given here without any revision by Hearn himself. (cf.
