Full calf, spines in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering on one burgundy and one black label in two compartments, intricated gilt tooling in remainder, gilt double borders on covers, rolled gilt tooling on board edges, blind-stamped dentelles, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers. Philip Henry Stanhope, 5th Earl Stanhope FRS (1805 – 1875), styled Viscount Mahon between 1816 and 1855, was a British politician and historian. He held political office under Sir Robert Peel in the 1830s and 1840s but is best remembered for his contributions to cultural causes and for his historical writings. . Set is very solid, only very slight wear to head/tail of spines, joints and extremities.Marbled paper boards are lightly rubbed in spots and dust soiling to head of text block.Spine of Vol.2 is missing both title labels and Vol.7 is missing one.The interiors of the set are lightly foxed with occasional damp staining near edges,and a book plate on all the front pastedowns."
