Old transparent mylar sheet acting as a dust jacket; sheet well rubbed with browning at spine ends and along flap folds. Original dark brown cloth with stamped borders and floral decoration to boards, some rubbing to boards with several small stains at bottom right corner of front board, some short tears and fraying at spine ends with shallow cloth loss at heel, spine's gilt stamped lettering remains vibrant, small cloth loss at board corners. Moderate toning and soiling along edges. Each of the book's four volumes have their own title page and index. Volume I features a frontispiece portrait of Macaulay with tissue guard with its title page having an illegible antiquarian ink signature at top right. Mostly mild toning and occasional foxing to interior leaves; some pencil marks and notes appear isolated to page margins of Volume 1 for no other such marks are readily apparent after a quick perusal. Laid-in as a bookmark is a partially used dark pink ticket sheet for the "Home Lecture Course," a series of lectures presented in Allentown (PA?) for December 1873 and January 1874; sheet comprised of tickets for Lecture #3 by the Hon. Robert E. Wright and titled "Politics and Politicians," Lecture #4 by Rev. DeWitt C. Byllesby, and Lecture #5 by the Hon. Edward Harvey; wear and perforated bottom edge of ticket #3 indicates that ticket stubs for the first two lectures were once present but were probably redeemed. Still an attractive very good- copy with firm hinges and a solid binding.
