Published in 1957 to mark the centenary of organised settlement, leading to the establishment of the Carterton township and the Wairarapa South County this book was the work of well-known historian, A G Bagnall.The district's early European associations reach back to 1842, but it was not until 1857 that organised land purchases enabled settlers to begin moving into the South Wairarapa. Among them was a Wellington builder, C R Carter, after whom the town iss named. In 15 chapters the author follows the development of the area, some of these being headed From Subsistance Farming to Sawmilling, The Beginning of Local Government and the Agricultural Background. Other chapters deal with topics such as education, civic and community amenities, commerce and industry, social and recreation organisations. A top-line local history. This copy of a scarce book is ex-library. First edition, 101 pages including list of pre-subscriberss, index, 47 b/w illustrations, mainly photos, some art/drawings, portraits, town plan tables and lists, frontis of J R Carter. Red hard covers with black front and spine titles are VG with wear to upper/lower edges, b/w montage pasted to front pastedown (repeating front cover illustration), half title has issue sheet, library stamp, crossed bar code lower edge small ink numerals top left with card pocket/library stamp to verso, library codes stamp with codes label over on title page verso, library stamp top edge on Forwartd page, library stamp lower edge last text page, text block otherwise excellent, old tape shadows to e/papers.
