Few people better qualified to record the history of the Bay of Plenty settlement of Maketu than Enid Tapsell could have been found to compile this book, first published in 1940 and one of the many printed then to mark the centennial of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Her ancestry reached back into early Maoridom and the Tapsell name came from Captain Phillip Tapsell, a trader and the first European to settle at Maketu, in the late 1820s. The story largely concentrates on the legends and history of the Arawa people of Maketu and Rotorua and vividly recounts important events, including the arrival of the Arawa canoe, later tribal wars, revenge attacks, the lore and life-style of the Maori and the advent of Europeans, which led to further conflict. This first reprint of 1977 was published to commemorate the unvailing of memorials to various members of the Tapsell family "and in particular the author, Enid Tapsell, on January 2, 1978 at Maketu." 75 pages, many cameo b/w drawings by H Dansey Jnr, Red card covers, with Maori motif to front are NF, text block also NF with two small, unobtrusive, marks lower title page, no inscriptions.
