Descripción

Jean Irvine, a well-established writer on Northland subjects, chose the Hokianga Harbour for one of her earlier studies. The Hokianga is is one of NZ's earliest settled areas, first by the Maori and centuries later by the European, with 1819 being the first recorded visit by the latter. Somewhat off the beaten track the Hokianga is one of NZ's most attractive areas and has preserved its historic links better than most. In her book the author covers almost every aspect of the district--- its history, its numerous towns and villages, ship building, kauri milling and gum digging, the early settlers and the Maori. A fine history of a historic region and now scarce. First edition of 1965. 105 pages followed by 18 pages of local advertising, several b/w photos and fold-out map. Pictorial card covers VG with short tear upper rear edge, Price sticker pasted over lower front cover displaying both decimal and stirling prices, small/neat ink name inside from cover, text block otherwise excellent.
