Descripción

Although the Highland Brigade in the British Army has traditions extending back much further, this history concentrates on two major campaigns which were in the recent past at the time of publication --- Crimea and the Indian Mutiny. The former is the shorter dealing with the Battles at Alma and Balaclava plus the subsequent period of more static wearfare before the conflict ended in 1855. The following year there was brief service in Persia. In 1857 the Indian Mutiny broke out when the native troops of the East India Company revolted. What followed was a long and often merciless campaign to restore order and the Higland Brigade was among the British forces that eventually did this, coming to the aid of the small number of British Army units paid by the company. The bulk of the book is devoted to the regiment's part in this struggle, marked by terrible atrocities. Although the mutinty was finally put down in 1859 it was not until 1868 that the last members of the regiment returned home. The final section covers subsequent deployments by the regiment in Africa, lastly in the Soudan in 1884. 312 pages, 36 b/w line drawings including maps and portraits. Blue hard covers are VG but the front board has a scattering of irregular, small stains, it has impressed black titles and decottions, including regimental colours from Crimea and the Mutiny, back board virtually unmarked, spine VG with gilt titles, light wear spine extremities, corners, book advertisement front pastedown, text block is excellent, no inscriptions, related newspaper clippings both sides RFEP, continued on rear pastedown, partially covering another book advert. A scarce book. N° de ref. de la librería 002965
