Almost 40 years of research is contained in Vance's classic history of the legendry Mackenzie Country of the South Island --- which takes its name from a notorious sheep-rustler and explorer. This is a fine publication in content and presentation, telling the story of pioneer settlers in grim and often unrelenting country --- oven-hot in summer, snow-bound in winter. They established some of the largest and best known high country stations in NZ. Section one covers the general history of the district, its people and development, the second the major stations of the area. First edition 1965, published for the author at the Timaru Herald. 275 pages including appendix, bibliography, index, 49 b/w photos, front e/papers drawing, map showing stations on rear e/papers, fold-out runs schedule 1889-1946 at back (slightly creased). Brown hard covers with gilt spine titles VG with short tape marks top/lower edges both boards, text block VG with light browning to page edges as closed, signed "Good Wishes W Vance" in ink on tltle page.Colour pictorial DJ is VG, not clipped, top edge taping to plastic protective covering losing adhesion.
