First Edition. xii, 1 leaf, 250 pp. Original cloth. Ex-library, else Very Good+, without dust jacket. 'In this examination of English religious thought of the earlier seventeenth century, the author gives careful attention to how the influences of humanism and Anglican liberalism combined with elements of Platonism to create a 'rational theology' emphasizing morality and devotion rather than dogma and worship. In choosing More as a pre-eminent figure of this religious movement, Lichtenstein has chosen wisely, since in More we see the intensity of a religious philosopher's concern with both the role of reason in religious life and with the need of viewing reason morally, spiritually, and intellectually as the ultimate religious authority and experience. What is of especial interest here is the author's detailed assessment of the place of intellection in religion. And in More's case this is more appropriate, even intriguing, in view of the fact that his work was to reveal an ambivalence in respect to the essential need of reason in man's religious life and, at the same time, a suspicion of intellection in religion. . . . Throughout his study the writer shows scholarly awareness of the first order; even the footnotes are little treasures of information. There is, in addition, a very helpful 'Essay on Bibliography,' which briefly but substantially discusses background studies of general seventeenth-century religious thought, works on Cambridge Platonism, and studies that deal with More himself. . . . The over-all picture of More provided here is a sympathetic and fair one, and we now have a more balanced account [of More than provided in Richard Ward's The Life of the Learned and Pious Dr. Henry More (1710)]' (George A. Panichas, review for The Journal of Religion, Vol. 43, No. 3, July, 1963, pp. 251-3). N° de ref. de la librería 17336
