Sinopsis:

HEAVY a multi-media tribute to Rock’n Roll and young artistsNew York, May 21, 2003 – Downtown Manhattan creative collective, alife, and West Coast-based publisher Neverstop are proud to present HEAVY: A two-volume multi-media tribute to Rock ‘n Roll featuring 56 artists’ reinterpretation of classic Rock ’n Roll album covers, new releases by emerging recording artists and rock inspired fiction. Directed by Tony Arcabascio, one of the four alife founding partners, HEAVY is the result of Arcabascio’s life-long love of Rock ‘n Roll and alife’s central position in America’s emerging contemporary art scene. Summed up, HEAVY is a celebration of the young artist movement and its take on the mother of subculture, Rock and Roll. It is a visual account of these artists’ view on what ‘has been’ and a musical experience of ‘what is and what’s to come.’ Published by Neverstop and scheduled for release this Fall, this newest alife project revisits 3 integral elements of Rock ‘n Roll success— music, packaging and writing—bound into 2 volumes.

Music: 12 mastered tracks by emerging recording artists were compiled and pressed onto 2 vinyl designed by alife. Some of these tracks were made specifically for HEAVY, and others are hot off the presses. With bands whose distinctive sounds and energies represent alife‘s view of today’s rock and roll, the albums were made possible by the irreplaceable help of Crystal Meers.

Packaging: The reinterpretation of 56 classic album covers by 56 artists. Adding their own flavor to preexisting covers, contributors range from the usual suspects, to those whose work deserves some newfound shine. Writing: An ongoing piece of rock inspired fiction written by Griffin Creech. Creech’s work has appeared in underground books such as Death and Boredom, and his writing has been rejected by more mainstream publications than he’d care to list. Representing a generation influenced by the lifestyles and personalities exemplified by Rock, he contributed a sidesplitting insight into that world.

HEAVY’s launch will be celebrated by an international tour of events and book-signings, attended by some of the artists.

HEAVY features art by: REAS, ESPO, JEST, ROSTARR, EASE, Shepard Fairey, Ryan McGinness, FUTURA and more.

From the Publisher:

The Neverstop conspiracy is dedicated to creating powerful messages and experiences. An inspired team of Cultural Engineers fuels Neverstop to advance music, art and culture with equal parts creativity, vision, and artistic integrity.

Founded in 1999, alife was born on NYC’s Lower East Side. Created by Tony Arcabascio, Tammy Brainard, Robert Cristofaro and Arnaud Delecolle, over the past four years alife has built a worldwide reputation as a leading underground cultural platform promoting and producing high-quality, innovative work and exhibits based around New York City’s emerging culture. As a diehard music fan, Crystal Meers spends all her time in search of promising new Rock ‘n Roll sounds. Based in LA, Crystal selected the bands featured in HEAVY to represent the best of North America’s current state of Rock.
