First Edition. xv, 312 pp; figs. Original cloth. Very Good+, in very good dust jacket. Chargaff's lecture is 'Of nucleic acids and nucleoproteins' (pp. 57-73). Medawar's is 'The Immunology of Transplantation' (144-76). Wiggers' is historical: 'The Impact of Harvey and his Work on Circulation Research' (255-79; Harvey Tercentenary Lecture). 'The ten lectures of this series, like their predecessors, reflect the judgment of the sponsors as to the outstanding achievements of medical research during the preceding year. As usual, the selection of titles and speakers, and the quality of the presentations, are superb. The flavor is predominantly biochemical and biologic-immunologic. Two lectures (by Bodian on poliovirus infections, and by Weller on virus-produced inclusion bodies) deal with the presently very active field of virology; two (by Pappenheimer on delayed sensitivity reactions and Medawar on the immunology of transplantation) are concerned with current explorations in immunology; three (by Chargaff on nucleoproteins, by S- Moore and Stein on protein structure with special reference to ribonuclease, and by Green on organized enzyme systems) deal with cellular biochemistry. Two of the remaining three (those by Gallagher on steroid hormone metabolism and the control of adrenal secretion, and by F. D. Moore on metabolism in trauma) also have a strongly biochemical flavor. Only one (by Wiggers on the impact of Harvey and his works on circulation research) has to do with the cardiovascular system, and this purely from the historical viewpoint. In the preceding volume, eight of the nine articles also were concerned with biochemistry and microbiology; the single exception was a lecture on synaptic excitation and inhibition. Apparently the outstanding achievements of current medical research, in the opinion of the Harvey Society (one of the most distinguished groups of its kind in the world), came from explorations at (or within) the cellular level rather than from studies of the organism as a whole or of communicating systems such as the circulation. It is to be hoped that this is because the former are currently undergoing rapid, exciting changes, rather than because the latter have become comparatively unrewarding except for immediate practical applications' (Review, Circ. Res. 1959, 7:497). N° de ref. de la librería 16855
