(Dr. Levy was the Director of the Japanese Area and Language School of the American Embassy in Tokyo Japan when I was a student there, 1961-63). First Edition. Stated printing, December 1958; Preface dated October 1958. AUTHOR INSCRIBED on front free endpaper. Two words are mysteriously crossed out of the Introduction, possibly by the author, and a Dedication to his father, Isidore, is pasted in; otherwise an unmarked copy. A folded book-marked size advertisement is laid in. Also laid in is a 1-page typed extract from a review of the book.) Hardcover bound in blue cloth lettered in sliver on front and spine. Cover is clean and fresh. Binding and hinges firm. Dust jacket is clean and unmarkedexcept for small tape residue where edge was fastened to the endpaper. Howard Levy was a highly respected sinologist. The inspiration for his book of essays on outstanding women of the T'ang who lived during the reign of Emperor Hsuan-tsung, was the poignant love story of his Precious Consort, the Lady Yang. 7-1/2 x 10-1/4"; viii + 198 pages. (A folded book-marked size advertisement is laid in, with the same artwork. Also laid in is a 1-page typed extract from a review of the book.) Hardcover bound in blue cloth lettered in sliver on front and spine. Cover is clean and fresh with only faint edge rubbing. Binding and hinges firm. Dust jacket is clean, moderately edgeworn with shallow chips primarily to spine ends and bottom of front panel; a few scuffs to flap folds. The inside (unprinted side) of the jacket is foxed and toned, not apparent to the printed side which is printed with full coverage of red, titled and with illustrations in black. Mr. Levy was a highly respected sinologist.
