PUBLISHER: Winnipeg : O.S. Thorgeirsson, 1916. DESCRIPTION: 88 p. port. ; 17 cm. Fine in card covers. Subjects: Poetry/Ljóð; Icelandic literature/Íslenskar bókmenntir. The author, a poet, lived in Dakota Territory and Winnipeg in the 1880's, later at Interbay near Seattle, Washington, and finally Blaine, Washington. She ws the daughter of Jón Sigurðsson and Guðrún Samsonardóttir, born and raised in the West of Iceland, involved in early drama at Stykkishólmur and composed a play The Death of Kjartan Ólafsson. Her first book of poetry, Stúlka (Girl), ws published in Akureyri in 1876. She immigrated to North America after 1880. This anthology of her poems was published in Winnipeg in 1916. On p. 5, she discusses Icelandic language issues in the new world. There is also a reference to O. S. Thorgeirsson, a Winnipeg publisher. On Aug 2, 1896, she gave a poetic toast to Iceland to an audience in Victoria, B. C. (p.48-49); and delivered another toast to a public meeting in "the West" of Canada - see pp 51-53. SIGNED on upper portion of front cover by Friðrik Lúðvík 'Lúlli' Kristjánsson, a noted Icelandic-Canadian poet (who was born Fáskrúðsfjörður, East Iceland, 1887, son of Kristján Kristensen, Danish ship's captain, and Kristín Björnsdóttir), immigrated to Canada at 16 in 1903, first to the Argyle Settlement, then to Winnipeg, was active in the Good Templars and Icelandic National League, well known for his humorous poetry.
