lightly tanned, t.p., 5 mm. short to bottom edge and laid onto whiter leaf, xvi (with errata at bottom)+340, final leafe tanned and a liitle ragged to lower margin and corner, also short as t.p. but not laid on (are these cancels?), early ms. index of contents to verso rear endpaper and facing pastedown.four-line early note recto front end-paper facing t.p. re;:Mrs Cooper, described as widow of an auctioneer but no mention of her being an actor and playwright, but does mention her authorship of comedy Rival Widows. First compiled following Walpole's Licensing Act of 1737 which introduced theatre censorship and ended her stage career. Title continues: With The Lives and Character of the known Writers taken from the most Authentick Memoirs, being The most valuable Collection of the Kind, now extant, afforing Entertainment upon all Subjects whatsoever'. Front pastedown has heraldic bookplate (T.P.Yound D.D.) superimposed an a another, larger and more florid but owner indiscernilbe, an early but illegible sig. top front end-paper. Vellum covers appear original, unworn but inevitably slightly soiled in places, black leather spine label a trifle damaged, simply has faint gilt 'Antient Poetry' label, virtually unworn string stitching visible to all spine end corners, which seems to be as bound.
