The film was directed by Tate Taylor, and stars Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jessica Chastain, Ahna O'Reilly, and Allison Janney. Set in Mississippi during the 1960s and the early days of the Civil Rights Movement, the film tells the story of a young Southern woman named Skeeter (Stone) who returns from college with literary ambitions. She catalyzes much social and personal controversy when she decides to interview the black women, who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families. Octavia Spencer won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, and the film received three Oscar nominations, including Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Actress in a Leading Role (Viola Davis), and Best Supporting Actress (Jessica Chastain).
