Descripción

HMS Electra, one of the Royal Navy's pre-war destroyers was soon in action after WWII broke out serving mainly in Atlantic waters before being assigned to the Far East, after participating in the hunt for the Bismarkand a convoy to Russia. This was to be Electra's last mission for she was one of the Allied ships lost in the Battle of the Java Sea. The combined fleet of British, US, Australian and Dutch warships proved no match for the rampant Japanese Navy and Electra was sunk after plunging through the battle smoke to fire her torpedoes at the enemy. Lieutenant Commander Cain was Electra's senior surviving officer and post-war gave this account to A V Sellwood. The few Electra survivors became prisoners of war of the Japanese and by war's end the privation and hazards of POW life had reduced that number substantially. Cain decsribes Electra as having been a "happy ship," the finest he had known. First edition of 1959 from Frederick Muller, 282 pages including index of ships, 18 b/w photos including frontis portrait of Lieutenant Commander Cain. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+, ink inscription on FFEP, text block otherwise excellent. VG colour art DJ has few short tears and chips. Size: 20cm By 13.5cm.
