Acerca de

Sinopsis:

This new four-volume major work brings together a wealth of valuable research on the qualitative research methods of grounded theory and its extension, situational analysis. Both approaches draw on poststructural developments in the social sciences and humanities, (re)situating these methods among cutting-edge approaches today. The articles in this collection come from a variety of disciplines, from sociology to science and technology studies, as well as focusing on a broad cross-section of issues relating to race, class and gender amongst others. Framed and contextualised by an introductory chapter, newly-written for the set by the widely-respected editorial team of Adele Clarke and Kathy Charmaz, the collection is clearly divided into the four thematic volumes:

Volume One: History, Essentials and Debates in Grounded Theory

Volume Two: Grounded Theory in Disciplines and Research

Volume Three: Grounded Theory Exemplars Across Disciplines

Volume Four: Situational Analysis: Essentials and Exemplars

About the Author:

Adele E. Clarke (MA, PhD) is professor emerita of sociology and history of health sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, where she also completed her PhD with Anselm Strauss. She has used and taught grounded theory since 1980, and developed situational analysis as an extension. Her book Situational Analysis: Grounded Theory after the Postmodern Turn (Sage, 2005) won the Cooley Distinguished Book Award, Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction. Her research has centered on social, cultural, and historical studies of science, technology, and medicine with emphases on biomedicalization and technologies for women. Her book Disciplining Reproduction: Modernity, American Life Sciences and the “Problem of Sex” won the Basker Award, Society for Medical Anthropology, and the Fleck Award, Society for Social Studies of Science. Clarke received the 2013 Bernal Prize for Outstanding Contributions from the Society for Social Studies of Science and the 2015 Reeder Award for Distinguished Contributions to Medical Sociology. Her current projects focus on the politics of reproduction and qualitative research methods.

Kathy Charmaz is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Faculty Writing Program at Sonoma State University.  In the latter position, she leads seminars for faculty to help them complete their research and scholarly writing.  She has written, co-authored, or co-edited fourteen books including Good Days, Bad Days: The Self in Chronic Illness and Time, which won awards from the Pacific Sociological Association and the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction.  The first edition of Constructing Grounded Theory received a Critics’ Choice Award from the American Educational Studies Association.  It has been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Polish and Portuguese and two more translations are underway. A co-edited four-volume set, Grounded Theory and Situational Analysis, with senior editor, Adele Clarke, just came out as part of the Sage Benchmarks in Social Research series.  Another co-edited volume with Antony Bryant, senior editor, The Sage Handbook of Grounded Theory, appeared in 2007.  Professor Charmaz is a co-author of two multi-authored methodology books, Five Ways of Doing Qualitative Analysis: Phenomenological Psychology, Grounded Theory, Discourse Analysis, Narrative Research, and Intuitive Inquiry, which Guilford published in 2011, and Developing Grounded Theory: The Second Generation, a 2009 publication with Left Coast Press.  She has also published articles and chapters on the experience of chronic illness, the social psychology of suffering, writing for publication as well as numerous papers on grounded theory and qualitative research.  Currently she is working on a text on symbolic interactionist social psychology and several papers on methods.

Professor Charmaz has served as President of the Pacific Sociological Association, President and Vice-President of the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction, Vice-President of Alpha Kappa Delta, the international honorary for sociology, Editor of Symbolic Interaction, and Chair of the Medical Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association.  She has received the 2001 Feminist Mentors Award and the 2006 George Herbert Mead award for lifetime achievement from the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction. She lectures and leads workshops on grounded theory, qualitative methods, medical sociology, and symbolic interactionism around the globe.
