The 1947 edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales published in the US by The World Publishing Company. First gathered in the early 19th century by German brother Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, who sat in the spinning rooms and tailor's shops of Kassel to listen to the oral recounting of ancient German folk tales, while the brother's quickly scribbled it all down. Napoleon's army had just retreated from Moscow when the Grimm's first collection of fairy tales was published, in 1812. This edition was illustrated by Jean O'Neill, whose drawings capture some of the dark magic of the tales, the best-known of which are all here: Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, The Sleeping Beauty, The Golden Goose, Red Riding Hood and Rumpelstiltskin.
