Sinopsis:

It is hard to imagine that anyone wouldn't want to read a true story of a young immigrant who left her home in Tibnin, Lebanon, with her two children to be with her husband in Dowagiac, Michigan. Her trip by camel caravan from Tibnin to Beirut was long and hard. In Beirut they boarded a freighter to France. They rode on a train to Cherbourg and were placed in a hotel until the Titanic arrived. The tearful part of the story is that author Joseph L. Thomas' grandmother could neither read, write, nor speak English. The only way she could express where she was going was a piece of paper which read, "Dowagiac, Michigan, U.S.A." She carried that paper all the way to that destination, while experiencing hardships and devastation on the RMS Titanic.

An immigrant from Lebanon, she, in essence, escapes from steerage below decks just before the gates are closed nad locked on the doomed vessel, finds room in a lifeboat for herself and her children, and survives to be loved and cherished by her family. These human stories are told with warmth and enthusiasm.

Grandma Survived the Titanic is a true story which, along with its sadness, is also humorous and educational for everyone, regardless of age.

From the Author:

Born on September 11, 1928, to George and Rose Thomas in Flint, Michigan, I can honestly say I have lived a long and happy life thus far. If I were to live my life over again I wouldn't change a thing. Every phase of my life has been happy and interesting. After graduating High School, I attended Business College and graduated one year later in 1948. To avoid the peace-time draft, I joined the Marine Corps and served faithfully for four years.

After being discharged in 1952, I hired in at Fisher Body Division of the General Motors Corporation. Seven years later, I met and married my lovely wife, Phyllis. We adopted four children, two boys and two girls, plus my grandmother who lived with us, too. She lived with us for fourteen years before passing away in 1976 at the age of ninety-one. Those years were memorable as she told us her story on many occasions of how she survived the Titanic. Later, as time rolled by, our children blessed us with seven grandchildren, of which two grand-daughters reside in Arizona and one grand-daughter, along with four grandsons, living in Michigan.

I retired from General Motors in 1978 and moved to Arizona in 1981. Lately we have been living six months in Arizona and six months in Michigan.

It was the year 2001 when I decided to write a story about my grandmother in her honor.
