Descripción London: Routledge & Sons and F. Arnold n.d. but, 1865. First edition thus of the four titles together, comprising frontispiece, pictorial general title & 23 plates with tissue guards (as called for). 8vo (7 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches), pages: 30:32:31:40, original pebble grain blindstamped brown cloth pictorially blocked in gilt to spine and upper cover. Five of the plates detached and worn on foremargin, one with several short tears, upper inner joint cracked, cracked at one gutter, some foxing. There is no list of plates accompanying Puss and Boots which is correct and confirmed by the pagination. The binding bright and in exceptional condition. The last three pages of Cinderella (pages 29-31) is an address "To the Public" in which Cruikshank rebukes Harriet Beecher Stowe and justifies his version of "Jack and the Bean-stalk". Cruikshank altered the stories to express his views on total abstinence and incurred the sharp censure of Charles Dickens who published an article "Frauds on the Fairies" in Household words. Cruikshank's answer to Dickens's attack appears on the last 13-pages of "Puss in Boots" as "An Address to Little Boys and Girls" & "To Parents, Guardians, and all Persons intrusted with the Care of Children". Another address on the verso of the general title draws attention to the confusion resulting from the similarity of the names of himself, his nephew Percy and great-nephew George. Very rare especially in the original cloth and in this condition. Only two copies recorded in British & Irish libraries, those in the V & A and Trinity College, Dublin.
