Descripción

12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 140 pages; London, Slatter & Munday; 1803. 2nd edition with substantial revision from the 1798 1st edition. Period paper over boards and leather covered corners. Sympathetically rebacked in matching black, polished leather. Titles and horizontal rules tooled in gilt to spine. This copy with a special Harvard College Library bookplate crediting Charles Minot, railroad official and Harvard alumni 1828 - as the beneficiary. Small circular stamp at the top edge of the plate notes "Harvard released." To front endpage are later ownership blind and ink stamps of prominent theologian and pastor of Holy Trinity in Manhattan, Robert D. Hershey. Hershey's blind stamp also present on a page mid-book. Almost imperceptible residuals of a card pocket at rear. Contents bright and clean with only superficial toning to paper stock. This 2nd edition of Landor's first significant poem was considerably revised by the author and his brother, both to correct mistakes and improve the poem. A preface referencing a political aspect was also added. The 2nd edition is quite uncommon; only 20 copies found in special collections of libraries searched on Worldcat. A work which held fascination for Shelley, Southey, DeQuincey and Coleridge; Landor's neo-classical work had a demonstrable effect on the development of English Romanticism. A solid copy with somewhat recent professional binding restoration. VG. N° de ref. de la librería 10448
