Descripción

Adapted from the Spanish and rendered into English verse by Walter Owen with drawings by Alberto Guiraldes. Red cloth with gilt titling on spine and pressed decoration on front board. Tan illustrated dust jacket. Large 8vo. ix, 326 pages. Very Good Plus. Corners slightly rubbed and faint dampstain to spine corner that doesn't show on any pages, boards otherwise show no obvious wear. The binding is very tight and the pages are clean excepting library bookplate of John Lamb Gillis (prominent St. Louis attorney) and inked inscriptions (when Gillis was in Bueno Aires) on front pastedown and flyleaf. José Hernández (1834 - 1886) was an Argentine journalist, newspaper publisher, poet, and politician. This epic poem, Martín Fierro, is widely seen as the pinnacle of the genre of "gauchesque" poetry. Size: Tall 8vo. N° de ref. de la librería 011761
