Descripción

Fine/None. First edition. Navy blue cloth stamped with gilt lettering and an intricate leaf pattern border on front cover and spine. With a gorgeous color frontispiece by Maxfield Parrish that appears nowhere else (Ludwig image #393, the same time as the Edith Wharton Italian Villa paintings). With a tissue guard for the frontispiece on which is printed a stanza to one of Carryl's poems and, at the bottom, "Drawn by Maxfield Parrish for "The Garden of Years" with the courteous consent of Messrs. P. F. Collier & Son." Laid in is a 3" x 6" advertising card, printed on both sides, promoting all 8 of Carryl's books including this one, and also noting this book to have a color frontispiece by Carryl. Evidently this was Carryl's last book, since it notes Carryl was only 31 years old and "had contributed" many remarkable poems (as distinct from "has contributed"). The frontispiece is one of Parrish's trademark 'urn in the garden with luscious trees and nice sky peaking through' images. For the Parrish completist, this is the only place to find the image. This book is in tight, clean and near pristeen condition with the only indication of its age being the top and bottom 1/8" of the spine shows some white as do a couple of the cover corner tips. A great item for the Parrish completist, especially with the even scarcer Wetmore advertising laid in. TO SEE MORE PICTURES AND ADDITIONAL SPECIAL ITEMS, VISIT OUR BOOKSELLER's HOMEPAGE.
