Author was a friend of Billy the Kid, although he was not considered an outlaw. He was a participant in the Lincoln County War and Adams believes his account to be fairly accurate. Adams gives the book a full page write-up in Six-Guns. Adams Six-Guns #458, Howes #C534. Previous owner bookplate on front pastedown, owner was F. Stanley who was a Catholic priest who lived in New Mexico and West Texas and became an amateur historian and author of more than 200 books and pamphlets about Texas and New Mexico. Previous book store's small label on back paste-down. Spine is slightly slanted. Rubbing to bottom and top edges of book with wear spots of missing cloth, wear is heaviest along bottom edge and at spine. DJ has normal edge and shelf wear, small chips on corners and spine tail, two 1/4-inch tears on head edges of covers, top 1/4-inch of spine head chipped away, lightly tanned on interior, tape on interior at stress point. Coe first came to Lincoln County as a boy, 13 or 14 years old, traveling with his Coe Uncle and cousins. A friend of William Bonney and employed by Tunstall, he had a role to play in the famed Lincoln County War, and became a major influence in the settling of the Ruidoso and Bonita River valleys.
