A must read for families of children with cochlear implants. Our children have every opportunity to succeed in a hearing world. As parents, our challenge is fighting a system that doesn’t support our decision for them to do so. Why aren’t all of the communication options given to us when our children are first diagnosed with a hearing loss? How many of you are in battles with your insurance company? Or with your school district because you didn’t send them to the state program to learn sign language? The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was designed to give all students a free and appropriate public education. Why don’t these funds automatically follow our children to oral schools? We are forced into adversarial roles within these systems because of the communication method we’ve chosen for them. By partnering together we can create new laws to prevent these practices from continuing.
