Rare small nostrum broadside, 8" x 6", ca. 1857, advertising 'Prof. Flagg's Instantaneous Relief', a cure-all [quackery]. In a very nice 9 11/16" x 7 5/8" antique frame (1860s-1890s), itself a $100 +/- item. Undated but one of the many claims made in the advert is that 'Over 200,000 Bottles were sold during the year 1856', making the date of 1857 a near certainty. A troubling piece of Americana, an example of the quackery that ill and suffering Americans were exposed to during this era. "FOR THE SPEEDY CURE OF Head Ache, Teeth Ache, Rheumatism, Diarrhea, Sore Throat, Neuralgia, Pains in the Side, Back or Stomach, Pleurisy, Painters Colic, Cramps, Fever and Ague, Chilblains, Coughs, Frosted feet or Ears, Burns, fresh Cuts, Sprains, Bruises, &c., &c.,". Also claims that "Physicians use it very extensively in their practice" and that the nostrum is "SUPERIOR to the learned skill of the 'profession' [medical doctors]". CONDITION: See all 3 photos enlarged. Overall Very Good -, perhaps Good +, with some foxing, a few tiny holes along old, faint foldlines (2 vertical, 1 horizontal), otherwise good. Appears to have been in the frame for many, many years. Buyer should probably place archival acid-free paper between verso and wood back. Frame itself in Very Good condition, a gilt-washed 1" frame with ornate filigree, depth of 3/4". This is a RARE early nostrum broadside. N° de ref. del artículo 04011
