First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half title, "To Field Marshall Lord Milne with due salutes & all good wishes, F. Britten Austin. 4 Oct, 1936". Lord Milne was a distinguished military officer who served in the Boer War and the First World War, and who ended his career as Chief of the Imperial General Staff. He provided a blurb for the back of the jacket of this book: "I read the book with much pleasure and interest The idea of converting the shadow of a dead Napoleon into a real full-blooded man should appeal to many, who have probably never realised the ruthless character to which he owed his success. This book might be read with advantage by many officers desirous of really understanding their profession, in the study of which the human side is too often subordinated to the the technical".
