Descripción

The author of this "story of New Zealanders who flew in the Fleet Air Arm (FAA) in World War I and World War II and the Roll of Honour of those who died in action and on active service" is chairman and curator of the of the FAA Museum of NZ in Auckland, which was the book's publisher. While the bulk of the book relates to NZ members of the FAA attention is also paid to World War I in which five NZ fliers died while serving with the Royal Naval Air Sevice in 1916 and 1917, two others died flying British naval aircraft in 1919 and 1927. During WWII more that 1200 young NZers volunteered to fly for the FAA, 760 men qualified as pilots or aircraw and many were to lose their lives in action, in crashes at sea, on land, during training or on aircraft carriers and 179, including a furtrher eight lost in the years immediately after the 1939-45 conflict, are remembered in the book's roll of honour .In that section with each entry background and service with the FAA is printed along with a portrait photograph --- with only two exceptions. Other illustrations include b/w photos of the aircraft they flew, aircraft carriers, shipboard views, action shots from some major operations including raids on theTirpitz and Japanese oil refineries in what is now Indonesia. Two introductory texts relate to NZers in RNAS and the FAA, the NZ FAA Association and the NZ FAA Museum. Two chapters cover FAA aircrew who became POWs, with some executed by Japanese captors, and the experiences of a NZ FAA pilot who flew photographic missions after two atom bombs were dropped on Japan and collected air samples for analysis. One entry is a concise roll of honour in chronological order. There are five appendices which include details of principal aircraft and aircraft carriers mentioned in the text and a glossary of FAA terms. An impressive colour front cover illustration shows Avenger aircraft taking off from a British Pacific Fleet carrier to attack the oil refineries in Sumatara. First edition, published by the FAA Museum of NZ in 2009, 319 pages including bibliography, roll of honour index and general index. Card covers with colour illustrations are NF with light curl to lower front corner, illustrated throughout with b/w photos, b/w sketch of two FAA crew on half title, text block is also NF, no inscriptions.
