A Flora of Common Plants Both Wild and Cultivated by Roy E. Snyder was published by The Ohio State University in, I'm estimating/guessing, 1956. Not an ex-library copy, this approximately 8 1/2" X 10 3/4", 216-page, believed-to-be First Revised Edition(for what it's worth), softcover offering is in G condition. There is some modest yellowing of text's pages, with some light fading/discoloration along all edges of original, light green front and back cover sections. Also, there is some modest bending/creasing in random spots along those same edges/extremities. This offering is held together by black, plastic-type binding. From Preface, "The purpose of this booklet is to make easier the student's personal acquaintance with Local Flora, Trees, Shrubs, Climbers, and Spring Wild Flowers. Easily used keys are given to enable the reader to identify quickly most of the interesting species found in the northeastern states. Increasing the number of plants has made the keys more complex. While an attempt has been made to eliminate many of the more difficult technical terms, it is practically impossible to do away with all terms, so a glossary has been included to simplify the use of the keys. .There are 104 families and 521 species listed; the Latin names, in general, conform to those used by Gray's Manual of Botany, 8th Edition." This most ambitious and learned effort, which travels very deep into the weeds(no pun intended) regarding practically all things having to do with its subject, is organized/presented in five chapters: "Key To the Genera of Trees"; "Key To the Genera of Shrubs"; "Key To the Genera of Climbers"; "Key To the Families of the Spring Flora"; and, lastly, "Classified Descriptions(Family, Genus, and Species). SPECIAL NOTE: It is in Chapter V that this offering's NEARLY 500 PEN AND INK DRAWINGS, PAINSTAKINGLY RENDERED, KICK IN, IN FULL FORCE, AND THEN NEVER QUITE SEEM TO END. The majority of this myriad of detailed, black and white sketches is credited to one Dr. Earl L. Core and West Virginia University. Also included are a Table of Contents, an extensive Glossary (from "Abortive" to "Zygomorphic"), and an equally-extensive Index (from "Abies" to "Zizia"). Most, if not all, of the data contained within the covers of this volume is just as current and valid today, I'm thinking, as it was when initially recorded/documented. Thanks very much!!.
