Descripción Hard Cover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good-. First Edition. 379 pp + ads, small 8vo (7 1/4" H). "This is a collection of short stories told by soldiers of the French Foreign Legion about themselves or their comrades. Very many of these men are examples of the 'flawed blades' that have snapped, leaving little but the sheath that once contained the sword - spirits that have broken, leaving only the weary body. The French Foreign Legion has been called 'the Cemetery of the Living', and practically every man in it has a 'story' (apart from the usually thrilling story of his life in the Legion itself) - the story of what found out the flaw that caused the blade to snap beneath the strain, leaving the mere sheath intact. Each tale is a human document - thrilling, dramatic and real - and rarely devoid of touches of the macabre grim humour of the Legion." Previous owner's small name stamp on front pastedown, light browning to page margins and to the endpapers, small tear at top of gutter of page 114, scattered light foxing marks (mainly in margins of pages 119 to 222) - some lighter foxing on adjacent pages, small foxing mark at top of pages 258 & 259, several very small holes and one small hole on the spineedges/hinges (interior hinges unaffected), browning and tiny foxing marks on edges of textblock, three small light stains on fore-edge of textblock - migrates into margin of some pages, one small corner bump, slight browning to edges of boards and on the spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, edge wrinkling/creasing - mainly along top edge, several small edge tears and chips, 3" tear on front panel with old tape residue on the inside - now archivally taped, light rubbing and soiling on rear panel, tiny soiling speck on front panel, a few tiny scuffs, light browning on hinges and flap-folds, small light stain on front flap, now protected in a removable mylar sleeve. Not Signed. Nº de ref. del artículo: 18154
