Descripción The Macaulay Company, New York, 1924. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. A very good hardcover in pebbled orange boards in a "good" dust jacket with chipping to top edge and sun-fading to the spine. This book was copyright 1923 by Boni & Liveright, but this is the stated "Nineteenth printing -- Special Popular Edition -- July 1924," from The Macaulay Company, with "150th Thousand" stated to dust jacket spine. Warner Fabian was the pen name used by muckracking reporter Samuel Hopkins Adams, 1871-1958 (who famously took on public health scandals and fraudulent patent medicines for McClure's and then for Collier's magazine, leading to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906) for his two "scandalous" novels on sexual themes, "Flaming Youth" and "Unforbidden Fruit." (His magazine story "Night Bus" also became the basis for the 1934 Frank Capra comedy "It Happened One Night.") There's some spunky & entertaining characterization and dialog in this 95-year-old romance, but what was a shocking expose of the scandalous behavior of those jazz age vixens with the bobbed hair can now seem a tad overwrought. In one curiously abbreviated scene, "Through her sundered lips he drew the wine of her breath deep, deep into his veins until all his self was merged and lost in her passion." Outside the wind blows up a storm (that always helps), and a paragraph later the young man is standing at the window. "'I'm not sorry,' she panted. 'I'm not ! I'm glad!" As there's some later discussion about the possibility of "an illegal operation" which can only be performed by "an obstetrician," and concern about whether young gentlemen should ever consider marrying young ladies who are, um . . . experienced, one presumes what's occurred must have been in the nature of some kind of sex act. The author is of course not obliged to provide us with anatomical diagrams, but couldn't he have -- we don't know -- mentioned the removal of a few items of clothing, just to give us a hint? At any rate, the lovely and charming Colleen Moore starred as "the winsome Patricia Fentriss" in the film version (which the Museum of Modern Art allowed to decay until only 11 minutes, mostly of wild party footage, remain), and appears here in a B&W still to the front panel of the dust jacket of what's identified as the "Screen Edition . . . the famous novel from which the notable film drama was made." There are however NO internal photographic illustrations, nor does it appear there ever were. 336 pp. Nº de ref. de la librería 005223
