Descripción

A country’s flag is a symbol of its sovereignty and its pride. It represents the country's identity in the international arena. All About The Flag Of India provides comprehensive information on the history and significance of India’s Tiranga. The Indian National flag started evolving from the nineteenth century. The first official flag to represent India was actually a British flag representing the Dominion of India. It contained the Union Jack in the top left corner, and a star representing the Indian Dominion in the middle of the lower right corner. The flag as an identity for the Nationalist Movement soon began to gain credence and the first widely accepted flag was the Vande Mataram Flag. This was designed after the partition of Bengal. It contained three strips of color, Green, Yellow and Red. The top green band had eight white lotuses to represent the eight provinces. The middle yellow band contained the phrase Vande Mataram in Hindi. The lower red band had a crescent at one end and a sun at the other end. Mostly, the early flags were religious in their symbolism. Even Gandhiji proposed a flag with red and green bands, the red representing the Hindus and the green, the Muslims. He later decided to include a white band to represent all other communities. Gandhiji’s flag also included a Charkha or spinning wheel. Later, a modified flag called the Swaraj Flag was adopted by the Congress. It consisted of Saffron, White and Green bands and a blue Charkha in the middle of the white band. Just before India’s independence, this flag was modified slightly to replace the Charkha with a Chakra, the Ashoka Wheel. It was then adopted as the National Flag of India.
