"The publication of a book of this character is prompted by the desire to not only further the growing interest in early American portraiture, but to assist in the identification of many portraits whose authorship is not known, or wrongly attributed. . The group of five portrait painters whose work is mentioned and illustrated in the following pages were the outstanding figures in the art of New England in the colonial period. . There are many fine portraits by the several artists other than those reproduced, the object, however, has been to show portraits of men, women, and children, and, in the case of Copley, to illustrate his art in oil, pastel and miniature.
