Adolf Galland was one of the first German authors to produce a credible book on the Luftwaffe in WWII. He was also in an ideal position to compile such an unofficial, biographical, history of its fighter forces. He was a member of the Luftwaffe from the time of the reconstitution of Germany's air force following WWI and was still serving at the German surrender in 1945. The book was an early translation from the German to English, appearing in this form in 1955. From his early training on gliders he graduated to the first Luftwaffe bi-plane fighters, served in the Spanish Civil War and at the surrender was operational on the first German jet fighters, having flown on almost every front where the Luftwaffe was active. His account continues to be an informative study of its operations, as well as the strategic conduct of the war at the highest levels of command and of the political influences on operations. "The First and the Last" was initially published in Germany in 1953 with Methuen's English translation appeariing in April 1955 --- this copy from the third impression also published 1955, 368 pages including index, 42 b/w photos, five maps/graphs. VG blue hard covers have bump to top rear corner with a few tiny spots to front board, spine strip with gilt titles on red panel near top is lightly sunned, brown fade markings to both FEPs, text block is excellent, no inscriptions. 21.5cm By 14.5cm.
